Iran National Standards Organization (INSO) is the sole competent Organization in the country for the development and publication of national standards. The organization is the official governing authority which is responsible for policy-making, good supervision in the fields of standards, guidance of the standard system, and ensuring the quality of goods and services.
INSO in its journey towards excellence and playing its key role in the promotion of Standardization, Metrology, Accreditation, and Conformity Assessment services has always been evolving and gaining a regional and international reputation and recognition.
Standardization in Iran began with the adoption of Iran Weights and Measures Law in 1925 and the initial structure for national standardization was laid in the framework of an affiliated office within the Ministry of Commerce in 1953. The increasing need of domestic industries for manufacturing products as per a set of recognized norms and standards led to the approval of the bill for the establishment of the Institute of Standards and Industrial Research of Iran (ISIRI) in 1960. So, the Institute became operational according to the specified functions and responsibilities under the Ministry of Industry, Mines and Commerce and joined the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) in the same year.
The critical and vital role of ISIRI as a statutory body necessitated making the Institute a national independent body; therefore its status has been upgraded and set under the direct supervision of the President of the Islamic Republic of Iran. This initiative was following by a revision in the law of ISIRI passed by the parliament which has been underway since 2011. As a result, the Institute has been upgraded in terms of the administrative structure under the new name of Iran National Standards Organization (INSO).
According to the law amending the laws and regulations of INSO passed in February 1993 and later amended in June 1997, The Supreme Council of Standards is the highest authority to decide INSO policies. The President of the Islamic Republic of Iran is the President of the Supreme Council of Standards, and the members of the Supreme Council of Standards are Ministers of Health, Treatment and Medical Education; Communication and Information Technology; Agriculture; Defense & Logistics of Armed Forces; Industry, Mine & Trade; Science, Research & Technology; Labor and Social Affairs; Roads & Urban Development; Oil; and the Presidents of  Planning & Budget Organization,  Department of Environment, as well as the Prosecutor General, the Chairman of the Iran Chamber of Commerce, Industries & Mines, INSO President as the Secretary of the Supreme Council of Standards, and two experts nominated by the INSO President and appointed by decree of the President of Iran.
